Discord Bridge is an app for Root communities that copies messages from the Root channels a community chooses into Discord channels. This notice explains what Discord Bridge sends to Discord, what it stores, who can see it, and how long it's kept.
Discord Bridge is run by Bit ("we" or "us"). Discord Bridge is an independent app. It isn't made or run by Root or by Discord.
What we send to Discord
Discord Bridge only mirrors channels that a community leader has assigned to it in Root, under "Channel assignment" in the app's settings, and that a manager has connected to a Discord webhook. For each new message in those channels, it sends Discord:
- The text of the message. Mentions of members, roles, and channels are turned into plain names.
- The author's display name in the community.
- A link to the author's Root profile picture, which Discord loads to show next to the message.
- Links to any attachments, or their file names when Root doesn't share a link.
New messages and edits wait 2 seconds before they are sent, so moderation tools can remove them first. A message deleted in Root during that time is never sent to Discord.
When a mirrored message is edited in Root, the new text is sent to Discord. When it's deleted in Root, Discord Bridge asks Discord to delete its copy. This works for messages mirrored in the last 30 days, and keeps working while a channel is paused.
A manager can also send a test message, which posts a short notice to Discord with that manager's name and profile picture.
Once a message is on Discord, Discord's Terms of Service and Privacy Policy apply to it. Anyone who can see that Discord channel can see it, and Discord or its members may keep copies we can't remove.
Discord Bridge doesn't send direct messages, messages from channels that aren't mirrored, system messages, voice audio, or reactions. It doesn't send anything to Discord other than what's listed above, and it doesn't read anything from Discord except a webhook's name when one is connected.
What we store
In each community's own Discord Bridge database on Root:
- Channel links. For each assigned channel: its ID, name, and group, the Discord webhook (its ID, its secret token, and its name), whether it's paused or broken, the last error, when it last sent something, and the Root user ID of the manager who last changed it.
- Message links. For each mirrored message: its Root message ID, channel, and the ID of its copy on Discord, so edits and deletions can find it. No message text is stored here.
- Activity log. For each thing sent to Discord: the channel, whether it was a post, edit, deletion, or test, whether it went through, the reason if it didn't, the author's display name, and the first 140 characters of the message.
Member names and profile picture links are kept in memory for up to 30 minutes so they don't have to be looked up for every message. They aren't written to the database.
How we use it
We only use this information to mirror messages to the Discord webhooks a community connects, to keep edits and deletions in step, and to show the community's managers what was sent and what failed.
We don't show ads. We don't use analytics or tracking tools. We don't sell this information or share it with anyone other than Discord, as described above. We don't use it to train AI models.
Who can see it
- Inside Discord Bridge: the community owner and the roles or members a community leader picks in the app's settings ("Who can manage the bridge"). They can see the channel links and the activity log. Webhook tokens are never shown to anyone after they're saved, only a shortened ID.
- On Discord: anyone who can see the Discord channel a webhook posts to.
- Root hosts Discord Bridge and its database. Each community gets its own separate copy. Root's Privacy Policy covers how Root handles hosting and backups.
Discord Bridge data isn't end-to-end encrypted.
How long we keep it
- Message links are removed 30 days after the message was mirrored. After that, edits and deletions in Root no longer reach the Discord copy.
- Activity log entries are removed after 14 days.
- Channel links stay until a manager removes the webhook. Removing it deletes the stored token right away.
Cleanup runs every hour while Discord Bridge is running. If it's paused, cleanup picks up again when it restarts.
If a community removes Discord Bridge, Root deletes that community's Discord Bridge data. Root's own backups follow Root's policies. Messages already posted to Discord stay there until they're deleted in Discord.
Your choices
If you're a member of a community that uses Discord Bridge, you can ask that community's leaders which channels are mirrored and to which Discord server. Deleting your message in Root deletes the Discord copy if it was mirrored in the last 30 days and the channel still uses the same working webhook. For older messages, or if the webhook was removed, ask the Discord server's moderators.
You can also ask us in Discord Bridge support on Root for a copy of your data held by Discord Bridge, to fix something, or to have it deleted. We can't delete messages from Discord ourselves once a webhook is gone.
