Edit Trail is an app for Root communities that keeps a history of edited and deleted messages in the channels a community chooses, so its moderators can see what was changed. This notice explains what Edit Trail stores, why, who can see it, and how long it's kept.
Edit Trail is run by Bit ("we" or "us"). Edit Trail is an independent app. It isn't made or run by Root.
What we collect
Edit Trail only collects messages from channels that a community leader has assigned to it in Root, under "Channel assignment" in the app's settings. If Root won't share that assignment with the app, Edit Trail uses every channel it can see instead, and its Channels screen says so. For messages in watched channels, it stores:
- The message ID, the channel it was posted in, and the author's Root user ID.
- The author's display name in the community at the time.
- The text of every version of the message: when it was posted (or when tracking started), and after each edit.
- The file names of any attachments. The files themselves aren't copied.
- When the message was posted, edited, and deleted.
When a channel is added, Edit Trail also saves the last 100 messages already in it, so later edits can be compared with them. It records when it started watching each channel.
Edit Trail doesn't save direct messages, messages from channels it isn't watching, voice audio, or reactions.
How we use it
We only use this information to show a community's moderators the history of messages in their watched channels: which messages were edited or deleted, each version, and what changed between them. The Analytics tab shows counts worked out from this same saved history, such as edits per member or per day. Nothing extra is collected for it.
We don't show ads. We don't use analytics or tracking tools. We don't sell this information or share it with anyone else. We don't use it to train AI models.
Who can see it
- The community owner and the roles or members a community leader picks in the app's settings ("Who can see edit history"). Nobody else in the community can see the history inside Edit Trail.
- When something changes, Edit Trail tells open copies of the app that a message in a channel changed, using only IDs. Each person's app then asks for the details, and only people with access get them.
- Root hosts Edit Trail and its database. Each community gets its own separate copy. Root's Privacy Policy covers how Root handles hosting and backups.
Edit Trail data isn't end-to-end encrypted.
Because the point of Edit Trail is to show what a message said before it was changed, editing or deleting a message doesn't remove the earlier versions from Edit Trail. They stay until they expire.
How long we keep it
- Each community picks how long history is kept under "Keep history for" in the app's settings: 30, 90, 180, or 365 days. The default is 90 days.
- A message and all its versions are removed once its last change is older than that.
- Removing a channel from Edit Trail's channel assignment stops new history from being saved and hides what's already saved. That history is deleted when it expires, or shows again if the channel is assigned again before then.
- The community owner can clear all saved history at any time from Edit Trail's Settings tab. That deletes every saved message and version immediately and can't be undone.
Cleanup runs every hour while Edit Trail is running. If it's paused, cleanup picks up again when it restarts.
If a community removes Edit Trail, Root deletes that community's Edit Trail data. Root's own backups follow Root's policies.
Your choices
If you're a member of a community that uses Edit Trail, you can ask that community's leaders which channels are watched and how long history is kept. They can remove channels from the app's channel assignment or shorten the retention period, and the community owner can clear all saved history.
You can also ask us in Edit Trail support on Root for a copy of your data, to fix something, or to have it deleted.
